Actors in the Renaissance were considered vagabonds, for the most part. They were generally poor, and acting was not a glamorous career. A troupe of actors had to be sponsored by a noble to be able to perform, otherwise it was illegal. All actors were men, and often women’s roles were played by young boys whose voices had not changed, or simply men with higher voices. It was illegal for women to act. To the people of the Elizabethan era, Shakespeare’s plays were bawdy and quite humorous, and not stuffy or difficult to understand like we view them today. I know Shakespeare was an actor as well as a playwright, but I don’t think anyone knows if he acted in his own plays.
Also, although actors themselves were poor, the upper class still attended Shakespeare’s plays at the Globe regularly. He was very popular, and the Globe was a classy place.
During Shakespeare’s time, all actors were men, including the female parts like Juliet and Nurse. These parts were played by more feminine men and young boys. The actors were probably what we consider as middle to upper-middle class today.
